Can an aesthesia cause long-term damage to the brain?

Key words: Anesthesia injection, Anesthesia drugs, Local anesthesia, Anesthesia types, Anesthesia side effects

There has been no evidence that anesthetics have a direct detrimental effect on human brain cells. Studies have not shown that adults who undergo major surgery that can be performed either under anesthesia or anesthesia will be protected mentally if they are anesthetized.

Before the drugs most commonly used in anesthesia were used on patients, experiments had been performed on volunteers, usually medical students and other university students. It can be assumed that in this group, for example, a significant intellectual disability had not been observed by the researchers.

The main topic of discussion now is the potential effects of anesthetics on the developing brain. More information is needed on this. In collaboration with several parties, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently launched a program called "SAFEKIDS" (Safety of Key Inhaled and Intravenous Drugs in Pediatrics), which is intended to strengthen research in this field. It is expected that within a few years more will be known about this substance, whether it will change the use of anesthetics, or the timing of operations in neonates and infants, or not.
