A urine tract infection or (UTI) is an infection of the urinary tract. The infection occurs at different stages in the urinary tract, including the:
Bladder
-- A bladder infection is also called cystitis or a bladder infection.
Kidneys --
An infection of one or both kidneys is called kidney infection or
Pyelonephritis.
Ureters
-- tubes that take urine from each kidney to the bladder are rarely the only
site of an infection.
Urethra --
An infection of the tube which carries urine from the bladder to the outside is
called urethritis.
Causes:
UTIs are mostly caused by
bacteria which enters the urethra and then the bladder. The infection most
often develops in the bladder, but can spread to the kidneys. Mostly, the body gets
rid itself of these bacteria. However, certain conditions increase the risk of
UTIs.
Females tend to get them more often because their urethra is shorter, and closer to the anus than Males. Due to this, women are more likely to get infected after sexual activity or when using a diaphragm for birth control. Menopause also can increase the risk of a UTI.
The following are factors
that increase your chances of having a UTI:
Diabetes
Advanced age and
illnesses that affect self-care habits (such as Alzheimer's disease and
delirium)
Problems completely
emptying the bladder
have a bladder catheter
bowel incontinence
Narrow urethra, enlarged
prostate, or any other factor that blocks the flow of urine
kidney stones
Being still (immobile)
for a long period of time (for example, while recovering from a hip fracture)
Pregnancy
Surgery or other
procedure on the urinary tract
